Episode 235: The Difference Between Belly Fat and Visceral Fat

Visceral Fat vs. Belly Fat: The Hidden Health Risk You Can’t See

The fat you can pinch isn’t the fat that’s putting your health at risk.

That might be the most encouraging and surprising thing I’ll say today because it means the number on the scale and the inches around your middle aren’t telling the whole story. Not even close.

In this episode I’m breaking down the difference between subcutaneous fat (the kind you can see) and visceral fat (the kind you can’t) and why that distinction could completely change how you think about your health journey.

Here’s what stopped me in my tracks recently: new research from Harvard shows that for every 10% reduction in visceral fat, there’s a 28% decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years. And the results hold even if you gain the weight back.

Read that again. Even if you gain it back.

That means every positive lifestyle change you make right now is doing something, even when you can’t see it on the outside.

Recap & Takeaways

  • In this episode you’ll learn:

    • The real difference between belly fat and visceral fat and why it matters
    • How menopause shifts where fat lands in your body and why belly fat becomes harder to manage after estrogen declines
    • How to measure visceral fat without an MRI (including the impedance scale I use myself and what it told me when the number on my scale went the wrong direction)
    • Why visceral fat is one of the first things to respond to lifestyle changes, even before the scale moves
    • How your gut microbiome is directly connected to your metabolic health, appetite, and insulin
    • Why cortisol and poor sleep are just as damaging as a bad diet
    • Practical, realistic tips that emphasize balance over perfection

This episode pairs perfectly with last week’s cortisol and the week before on gut microbiome because it turns out what’s living in your gut has everything to do with what’s accumulating around your organs.

And if you’re ready to stop just knowing what to do and start actually doing it, the Healthy Looks Great on You Lab is open through July 6th. This quarter we’re going deep on gut health. There’s still time to join us.
